Purpose: To enjoy the camaraderie of others
through the building and sailing of radio control model
sailboats
AMYA Membership: The CCMSC is Club #62 of the
American Model Yachting Association. Club members are
encouraged to join the AMYA ($25.00), which includes
their excellent quarterly magazine, Model Yachting.
Membership in AMYA is a requirement to register a
sanctioned class boat (such as the Victoria) and obtain
a sail number. The AMYA website is http://www.amya.net
Club Boat: The boat our club has chosen is the
Victoria One Design by Thunder Tiger. It
is a “one design” boat. This means that all Victorias
are basically alike and when raced, it is the skill of
the skipper, not the better boat that decides the
winner.
Where do you get a Victoria and for how much? It
is available through most major hobby catalogs (and on
line from towerhobbies.com or majorhobby.com)
for approximately $100.00. Most sailors do not use the
sails that come with the kit, but buy professionally
made sails or make new sails. A set of sails cost
between $40 and $95. Also needed are a two channel
radio (approximately $50.00) and preferably a sail servo
(a powerful servo used to control the sails) – about
$65). (The boat can be sailed with the sails from the
kit and using only the servos, which come with the radio
for a total of approximately $150; but it will not be
competitive.)
How can I find out more about the Victoria? A
tremendous amount of information on the Victoria is
available on the Internet. The “Victoria” One Design
web site is amya.net/Victoria.html. Also try
intellisys.net/VRC/ (The Victoria Resource
Center.)
Sailing Location: We usually sail at Hamblin
Pond, Barnstable. Currently we try to sail on Wednesday
and Saturday from 10:00 PM to 2:30 PM, but also notify
members and those interested by email to confirm each
sail. We try to sail into early November.
